How it begins
Sera, the eldest daughter-in-law, is looking for a studio near her own home for her mother-in-law, who lives alone, and offers to sort out the older woman's bankbook before the move. For three years, KRW 800,000 has gone out every month to Mari, the youngest son's wife — ever since Mari called to say the loan interest was choking her. Sera picks a ground-floor unit near the hospital and sits down to sign. The door opens, and the "landlord" who walks in is Mari. Mari slides her bag over the papers, but Sera has already seen the owner's name and purchase date on the property register.
