How it begins
Before his sister Harin can stop him, Jion drops their mother's gold ring onto the plate. "Locked in and starving for a week. Gold for bread, one for one." "Not Mom's ring!" But the ring is gone, and in its place sits a small loaf of bread. Harin moves the bread and flips the empty plate over. No ring anywhere. "There's not even a hole." Jion doesn't flinch. "Well, now we have food."
