How it begins
Holding a box of keepsakes above the water, Suyun looks down at her friend Hansol, pinned under a fallen shelf. "The shelf fell over. My foot's stuck." Suyun sets the box down and heaves at the shelf, but her arms start shaking almost at once. "Pull it out now. I can't hold this long." "It's still stuck." There's nothing on the cramped floor to prop the shelf up. Nothing but the box. And Hansol knows it: "The last letter is in there."
