How it begins
It's Rahee's first day at a new job, and her mother, Yeonsuk, lays a pair of cut shoelaces in front of her. “You're staying home today too.” Rahee knows exactly what her mother is trying to do. Gripping a bus card, Rahee doesn't back down. “It's my first day. The bus is almost here.” Then she digs a worn pair of sneakers out from under the shoe rack and checks whether they'll fit. “I'll wear Dad's sneakers if I have to.”
